🧠 Rule Knowledge = Smarter Play: Understanding Obstruction

🧠 Rule of the Week: Understanding Obstruction (Fielders)

📘 Definition:
Obstruction occurs when a defensive player without possession of the ball and not in the act of fielding impedes the progress of a runner. This includes physically blocking the base path or creating confusion that affects the runner’s decision-making.

🚧 Types of Obstruction

🧍‍♀️ Common Fielding Mistakes to Avoid

  • Blocking a base without the ball—even if you’re “expecting” a throw
  • Standing in the baseline while watching a play unfold elsewhere
  • Faking a tag or throw to confuse the runner (verbal or visual distraction counts too!)
